History of Dyslexia

By Lisa Gusimat Ramirez

Researchers have been trying to understand dyslexia for many years.

Decades of scientific research have confirmed that dyslexia is a neurobiological learning disability—not a sign of low intelligence—and that students can learn to read with explicit, systematic instruction.

Susan Barton founded Bright Solutions for Dyslexia nearly 30 years ago—to help parents, educators, and tutors understand dyslexia and provide effective, evidence-based reading instruction through the Barton Reading & Spelling System.

Freedom to Read

By Lisa Gusimat Ramirez

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we’re reminded that freedom comes in many forms. For someone with dyslexia, learning to read brings a very special kind of freedom—it opens doors that once seemed out of reach.

It means being able to pick up a favorite book without fear or frustration, complete homework independently, understand written instructions, and participate in the classroom with confidence.

This July, as we celebrate our nation’s freedom, we also celebrate the life-changing opportunities that come when a person with dyslexia learns to read.

Every parent hopes for the day their child discovers the joy of reading.

One mother watched her daughter struggle with dyslexia for years. Reading was difficult, homework was frustrating, and confidence was slipping away. But with the right instruction, everything changed.

Read—or listen to—this inspiring story here.
