State of Dyslexia Report

The 2026 State of Dyslexia in the United States report is now available, and it is a valuable resource for both parents and educators.

The National Center on Improving Literacy compiled this free report to summarize where each state currently stands on dyslexia‑related laws, policies, and initiatives.

It highlights key areas such as universal screening requirements, teacher training in structured literacy, and students’ access to appropriate evidence‑based intervention.

The report is easy to explore in either of its two formats—a downloadable PDF or an online flipbook—so you can quickly look up your own state and compare it with others.

As you prepare for IEP or 504 meetings, or conversations with school leaders, this document can help you understand what supports should be in place for students with dyslexia and whether your state is meeting that standard.

It is also an excellent tool to share with local parent groups, tutors, and advocates who are working to improve identification and instruction for struggling readers in your community.

Protect Your Child's Progress

Build Momentum and Accelerate Progress This Summer

To prevent the summer slide—and help your child close the reading gap even faster—continue Barton tutoring (or another strong Orton-Gillingham-based program) throughout the summer months.

Tutoring over the summer is important to a child’s success, especially if they are in the early levels of the Barton Reading & Spelling System (Levels 1-4). At that stage, your child is still building the foundational skills needed for reading fluency and comprehension.

A 3-month break can quickly undo months of hard-earned progress, leaving your child struggling to catch up in the fall.

Instead, use the summer to supercharge their momentum. By maintaining—or even increasing—sessions during the break, you can keep your child’s skills sharp and their confidence high.

Watch this 7 minute video, where Susan Barton explains why consistency over the summer is the secret weapon to closing the reading gap faster.

Cumulative Impact:

  • Summer slide is cumulative, meaning that the learning losses add up over time.
  • Research indicates that over a single summer, students typically lose about 2 months of reading skills.
  • By the time a student reaches middle school, the cumulative effect of summer slide can result in the equivalent of 2 years of lost learning.

A Family's Journey With Dyslexia

By Lisa Gusimat Ramirez

We are always grateful when families share their stories, knowing they bring hope to others walking a similar path.

When Josh reflects on his family’s journey, one “aha” moment stands out. Years ago, he watched his younger sister struggle in school. Despite working hard, she brought home D’s, leading to frustration and tears.

Everything changed when she was diagnosed with dyslexia—it confirmed she wasn’t “lazy,” she simply needed the right kind of help.

That experience stayed with Josh. When his son, Graeme, began kindergarten, he and his wife, Mallorie, recognized the signs early.

They moved forward with clarity and purpose, knowing how much Graeme longed to read. He would pore over his comic books and his Action Bible, dreaming of the day he could read the words himself.

“It was his dream to read,” Josh shared.

That dream is becoming a reality with the Barton Reading & Spelling System. As Graeme’s reading improves, his confidence has soared. A pivotal moment came when he met a local author who is also dyslexic. Realizing that a successful creator also has dyslexia sparked a shift: “Wait a second… I can do this too.”

Josh offers heartfelt advice to parents beginning this journey: Don’t be too hard on yourself. If you once believed your child wasn’t trying hard enough, let that go. Rejoice in finally finding answers—and take the next step.

For Josh and Mallorie, that step was early intervention. Today, with the Barton Reading & Spelling System and the support of his tutor, Laurie Frydenlund, Graeme is on a path filled with progress and hope. The child who once only dreamed of reading is now living that dream.

Watch Josh tell his family’s story in this 4 minute video.

Count Down to Summer

If you’re counting down the days until summer, you are not alone.

For parents of children with dyslexia, the school year is more than just a calendar—it’s a marathon of patience, extra effort, and emotional energy.

Between tutoring sessions, last-minute assignments, and advocating for your child’s needs, you have been their greatest champion. You’ve celebrated the small victories others might miss, and you’ve stood beside them when things felt overwhelming.

That steady support is what helps them grow—and begin to believe in themselves.

As May unfolds—and with Mother’s Day reminding us just how much heart this journey requires—take a moment to acknowledge your own hard work. This finish line isn’t just for the students; it belongs to the parents who helped them get there.

Take a deep breath and be proud—you have truly earned this break.

Tutor Certification

Becoming a Certified Barton Tutor is more than a credential—it’s an opportunity to change lives.

Across the country, families are searching for tutors who understand how to help students with dyslexia succeed. Certification provides added confidence, credibility, and the opportunity to be included on our referral list.

Many Certified Tutors go on to build thriving tutoring practices, while others use their training to deepen their impact within schools or learning centers. And while certification is not required to be an effective Barton tutor, it’s a powerful way to strengthen your skills and expand your reach.
